In which we say goodbye to summer....

Sigh.  Summer is over.  I am sad to see it go.

Relaxed bedtimes, summer camp, the freedom of walking out of your house without 1,000 layers of clothes that make it too difficult to buckle seatbelts or fit behind the steering wheel.

The joy of knowing you'll be warmed by the sun, lick melting popsicles that make you sticky but it doesn't matter because you'll be swimming soon anyway.

School offers it's own excitement.  My second grader is thrilled she gets her own locker! We've been instructed in the finer points of how to open said locker, and that there are two spaces.   My 7th grader, well, the jury's still out.  She's excited to see her friends again, is looking forward to the clubs she'll get involved in at school.  She's also still getting to know her teachers though.  There is a subtle anxiety about 7th grade but she has good friends that will see her through.

New books, new supplies: backpacks anyone?

It's still summer though! I refuse to let it go.  There's still a little summer joy in the air.  As much as I love summer I do love how the nights transition in to the cool nights of soon-to-be Fall.  So, if we could have a new season: Sall OR Fummer, ya know, a combo of Fall and Summer, that might be kinda "cool".  Because I do love Fall too.  The cozy feeling of wrapping in a warm blanket with a good book, sipping a hot drink.  It's what comes after Fall that I dread.  And we will not speak it's name.

So to you all I say, welcome back to school, enjoy the last days of summer.  We're here, we're hip, and we're "moving right along!"

No, you won’t be eating parsley!  However, you will be playing live action role playing games called “Parsley Games".  We will first explore "text adventure" games, the original.  Then we will play the live action version.  No vegetables will be consumed during this program!  Due to the challenging nature of the games, this program is only for kids in the grades 4-6.

Come build with your favorite interlocking blocks!  Each week we will have a challenge, and if you’re lucky, your creation will be chosen to be displayed in our glass case.

We use very small builders pieces, so younger folks are encouraged to enjoy our toddler room during Builders Club.

So come on down to the Russell Library for some summer fun!

Spring Break!

It's Spring break!  The warm weather is finally here.....

At the library this week we have a lot going on.

Tonight, Tuesday, April 19 there is an art program: My Garden Grows with Meredith Arcari, a teaching artist from Wesleyan.  Using mixed media: fabric, paint and paper, Meredith will help young artists explore the world around them through observational skills.

This art program requires registration and is for kids in grades 3-5.  Plenty of spots available.  Give us a call: 860-344-8479.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, April 20: our first monthly Family Game Night!  From 6-8 families with kids of all ages can come down and play games together.  We'll have foosball, board games and card games among others.  New to Foosball?  Just love a simple, old fashioned board game?  Then Family Game Night is the program for you!  Bring the whole family for some family fun...

Hope to see you this week at the Russell Library..

In an amazing multi-media interactive extravaganza, Caryn Lin transforms sound itself through the use of her 5 string electric violin and a myriad of modern technology that takes the students from the classical days of Bach to today’s techno-wonders.  Caryn opens up students’ minds to the fact that they can explore, in whatever discipline they study, "out of the box thinking."
